Your Brain, the Prediction Machine

In the profound words of Abraham Joshua Heschel, "Words create worlds." This idea carries significant weight when we consider the impact of our internal dialogue on the way we perceive ourselves and the world around us. In this exploration, we delve into the intricate workings of our brain as a prediction machine and how the beliefs we hold shape our reality.

The Potent Words We Tell Ourselves

I am nothing.

I’ll never figure this out.

Nobody likes me.

My life will never be what I want it to be

I always act before I think.

These statements can trigger a range of physical and emotional responses. The tightness in the throat, the sinking sensation, or the onset of tears – these reactions are in direct response to the profound connection between language and our mental and physical states.

The Brain as a Prediction Machine

In his fascinating book, "The Expectation Effect," David Robson introduces the concept of the brain as a prediction machine that constantly simulates the future. Our thoughts, particularly the predictions we make about ourselves, others, and the world, play a pivotal role in shaping our reality. The brain, in its predictive nature, responds to these beliefs by influencing our physiology and overall well-being.

Your Beliefs, Your Reality

At its core, the idea is simple: your beliefs create your reality. The statements we repeat to ourselves become self-fulfilling prophecies, shaping the course of our lives. If we consistently tell ourselves that "my life will never be what I want it to be," we inadvertently set the stage for a reality that aligns with that belief.

Your brain does not distinguish between what you think and what is actually happening in your world.  All information is perceived as reality and is information that your brain responds and reacts to in order to maintain homeostasis, or safety.  The unfortunate part is that when we tell ourselves these statements or beliefs, our brain looks to verify the truth of what we are saying. That means then, that we are far more likely to filter out information that contradicts what we believe and magnify information that verifies our beliefs.

Breaking the Cycle

Understanding the power of our words is the first step towards breaking the cycle of negative predictions. By cultivating positive and empowering beliefs, we can actively shape a reality that aligns with our aspirations. This isn't about wishful thinking; it's about harnessing the inherent capacity of our brain to influence our experiences.

The Impact on Well-being

Research indicates that a positive and realistic mindset can contribute to better mental and physical health. By altering our internal dialogue, we not only transform our perception of the world but also positively impact our overall well-being. The mind-body connection becomes evident as our thoughts manifest in physiological responses.
